Flakeboard - an industry leader in the production of quality composite wood panels
Incorporated in 1960, Flakeboard Company Limited has grown from a pilot plant, designed to showcase panel manufacturing equipment, to a multi-site, world-scale producer of composite wood products. Using lumber industry by-products and under-utilized wood species once landfilled or burned as waste by forestry operators or sawmills, Flakeboard manufactures a variety of particleboard, medium density fibreboard (MDF) and FIBREX® thin high density MDF. Flakeboard's ability to service a broad range of market needs stems from a diverse range of technological capabilities.
Flakeboard Sault Ste. Marie, formerly a joint-venture with Georgia-Pacific Corporation, is one of the most technologically advanced operations of its kind. The mill produces the greatest volume of MDF of all single line presses in North America, utilizing advanced automation, dual refining and specialized quality measurement systems.
In 2005 Flakeboard built a 45,000 square foot melamine lamination plant immediately adjacent to this facility, housing a fully automated high throughput 5'x20' melamine press. The expansion to allow melamine capabilities on- site, in conjunction with an MDF product that is recognized by the kitchen cabinet and furniture industries as one of the highest quality substrates available, puts Flakeboard Sault Ste. Marie in a position to offer the finest range of MDF panels available.
Our St. Stephen, New Brunswick facility employs continuous panel production technology on two particleboard lines, two thin MDF lines, and one single opening particleboard line providing Flakeboard with a product range second to none. Over 80% of the products shipped from this facility are further upgraded with value-added finishes such as melamine, decorative paper, direct print or paint, in hundreds of different colors and patterns.
Flakeboard employs leading edge technology in our finishing operations as well, with one continuous and two single opening melamine presses, single or dual sided paper lamination, 9-stage direct print line, pegboard press and our state-of-the-art paint line. Along with the melamine presses housed at the Sault Ste. Marie location, Flakeboard today operates a total of nine value-added finishing lines.
Flakeboard made history in 2006 when it acquired three MDF and three particleboard plants from Weyerhaeuser. The plants are located in Malvern, Arkansas; Albany, Oregon; Eugene, Oregon; Bennettsville, South Carolina and Simsboro, Louisiana and manufacture particleboard and MDF. This historical acquisition added 1.1 billion square feet of capacity to Flakeboard operations.
From New Brunswick, Canada to Eugene, Oregon in United States, Flakeboard continues to set new standards in the manufacture of composite wood panels. With strategic investments in cutting-edge technology, new product development, continual training in a team-based environment and shared goals of constant improvement and customer satisfaction, Flakeboard continues to provide our customers with the widest selection of composite wood panel products in the industry today.
